One of the puzzling aspects of Hammond’s life was that there was no death certificate. After searching through the New York state death archives, I finally put down cold hard cash and paid the state of Florida to look into their records. Turns out they didn’t have anything either.
The State of Florida did not start requiring death certificates until 1917, so we may never know what findings there might have been, if he died of old age, or something else. There is also scant details of where he died; on the Lounger, or at the Hotel Alcazar which he was known to stay at.
Either way his body was swiftly delivered back to Manhattan for funeral and burial, despite the cold ground of a January New York.
